It's crazy how long it took me to join the Thin Mints team. My mom was a die hard fan from the beginning but I always turned my nose up at them. Now, I have to admit they're my favorites, too. Glad to be on the same team with you, Jody!
Your “vision” of the cookie eating in contrast with the reality KILLED me! I could totally relate. 😂 My dad was fond of telling people, “My daughter eats like a bird…a vulture.”
Now that I am [ahem] more mature, I carefully eat Samoas along the chocolate lines on top (which ensures a slightly more feminine 4-5 bites per cookie). In answer to your second question, dried fruit is my go-to sweet fix.
Also, thanks for the recipe! I’m excited to try it out. I have a “Breakfast Cookie” that I make regularly. It’s a recipe from Bobby Flay akin to yours. I’m excited to try a new option.
Oh, Jeanette, that quote from your dad cracked me up! I had to read it out loud to Shawn 😂 And I’m a dried fruit lover as well. Mango is my favorite. What’s yours?
😂 🤷🏻♀️I come by it honest. My mother was very sincerely “complimented” by her future father-in-law after their first meeting. My dad had taken her home for a meet-the-parents weekend and, upon returning back to school, my dad called home to ask what his parents thought. My grandpa’s reply was, “David, I LIKE that girl. She eats like a man!” (Backstory: my grandpa worked for the county road crew and regularly took four sandwiches, a couple of pieces of fruit, a slice of pie, and a thermos of tea for lunch.) 🤣
In other news: I love to toss a mix of dried cherries, dried banana, and pecans. Apricots are also a fave.
“I like to use raw, local honey here because it makes me feel righteous” 😂 YES!
Samoas and Thin Mints are always competing for first place in my heart. Although I just read that Samoas are “also known as Carmel deLites”, and if that ever becomes their popular name I will have to stop eating them. If GS taught us anything at all it is that marketing is everything.
My favorite guilt-free sweet treat is a chunk of a dark chocolate bar from our local bean-to-bar chocolatier. It satisfies my sweet tooth while also making me feel quite righteous. 😉
Believe it or not, I haven't had a GS cookie in over fifteen years. Initially, we avoided them because my husband was a pastor, and if we bought from one scout, well, we were soon ordering from every scout in our church community! Which also meant that we "had" to buy the popcorn when the boy scouts had their sale. And after I had cancer 8 years ago, I really try to eat nutritiously, so now we stay away from sugary treats.
Which brings me to your second question--I am tickled to tell you that since you shared your peanut butter cup granola recipe, I have made three batches! We love the taste, the simple recipe, and the nutritional value (we often use stevia-sweetened chocolate chips). Thank you so much, Maile, for your stories and for your recipes.
Karen, it does my heart good to know someone else is enjoying that granola! And I absolutely get the dilemma you faced while pastoring. I feel that pressure with my own children! Each one will bring a fundraiser home from school and then I end up buying sub sandwiches to last us for a year:)
Yes -- cookies! I know many a health conscious person who has given up cookies altogether because they think there's no way to make them healthy AND tasty. My girls will love this treat (sans the coffee!). We still may need to buy Girl Scout cookies as well, though, until someone figures out how to make convincing homemade Samoas.
Samoas! Good gracious, Matt, I forgot about the Samoas. That's another GS offering that took me a while to come around to, but when my more mature taste buds blossomed, I finally saw what all the fuss was about. So good.
Tagalongs are my favorite. Dreamy and delicious! My go-to healthy sweet is frozen bananas. I’m quite sure the grocery guy wonders why I buy so many bananas. 😳
My Littles love frozen bananas, too, Jody! I'm always amazed when I saw them perched at the island with a frozen banana stuck on the end of their fork just munching away. Their tastes are usually a bit more processed than that, but I'm grateful that they've found a healthy option that they enjoy. Do you just eat them straight up or do you add any extras on top?
Awww, those cuties. I eat them straight up. I also use them in smoothies most days. Add a little vanilla and almond milk and it kind of tastes like snow cream. :)
My favorite Girl Scout cookies are the peanut butter sandwiches (they'll always be Savannahs to me!) and Thin Mints--I just can't choose a fave between those two.
I've been trying to eat mostly healthier, so my go-to sweeter snacks lately have been a small bowl of Greek yogurt mixed with chocolate or vanilla protein powder and frozen to the consistency of soft-serve ice cream or a scoop of natural peanut butter (definitely not crunchy!) mixed with a little chocolate protein powder and a few dark chocolate chips.
I'm definitely trying your Gorgeous Globes of Goodness--just put chia seeds in my Amazon cart!
Dena, I hope you enjoy the Globes! And I'm intrigued by this idea of mixing protein powder with yogurt and freezing it. I've never done it, but I'm definitely going to give it a try. Thanks for sharing!
Thin mints forever!

Now that you've made me hungry for Girl Scout cookies I'll have to open my box of them!
I’m jealous, Nancy! I still haven’t managed to lay my hands on a box of Thin Mints yet!

Jayna, you are so right about the sanctifying power of a good fair trade dark chocolate! What’s the brand?
Enna Chocolate

I'm laughing about the sub sandwiches, but yep! Thank you, Maile.

Still thin mints😋
Lindor 70% dark truffles (diabetic info: a glycemic index of zero, due to the fat content 😋👏🏻)
Oh, Margie, those Lindor truffles are my older girls FAVORITES. But I had no idea that their glycemic index is zero--that's good to know!
We have many Girl Scouts here! I'm sure I could send you some.
